General guidelines for purchasing a guitar:

If you wish to play rock, blues, or jazz you will need an electric guitar. If you’d like to play pop, rock, jazz, classical, or fingerstyle, you will need either a steel-string acoustic or a nylon-string acoustic guitar. Keep in mind, beginner models for steel-string guitars will not be set up well, causing a lot of difficulty for beginners, right out of the box. This can be remedied with a professional setup, but that just creates unnecessary expenses. A nylon-string guitar will be much easier to play.

Size: Quarter-size is suitable for 4-6-year-olds. Half-size is suitable for 6-9-year-olds. 3/4 size is suitable for 9-11-year-olds. And full-size is suitable for those 12 years and older.

What kind of guitar and guitar size do I need?

Beginners will undoubtedly have this question in mind before taking their first guitar lesson. As a beginner, it really does not matter what kind of guitar you use. The foundational work remains the same for all guitar types and most styles can be applied to all kinds of guitars.

What accessories do I need?

  • Thin and medium guitar picks are recommended for beginners. Appropriate guitar picks will also be given to students by the instructor.

  • Clip-on tuners will be required.

  • If you are playing an electric guitar, you will need a small practice amp.
